Mexico has pledged to peak its greenhouse gas emissions by 2026 as part of a new climate change plan that is the first of its kind among developing nations. The target will become Mexico's official contribution to a global climate change accord.
鈥淲e warmly welcome the announcement by the Government of Mexico on new greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets,鈥� said Ernest Moniz, US Energy Secretary. 鈥淭he commitment Mexico has made today sends a strong signal of Mexico鈥檚 determination to do its share in helping the world reduce emissions globally; it stands as an example for countries around the world to follow as they undertake ambitious goals to combat climate change as we all prepare for the upcoming COP21 meetings in Paris this December.
鈥淭his announcement also launches a new Task Force that complements an effort launched last year in the trilateral North American Energy Ministers meeting I hosted in December with my Mexican and Canadian counterparts,鈥� Moniz continued. 鈥淎s we move ahead with our collaboration, we are reinforcing North America鈥檚 energy potential and environmental leadership.
鈥淚 look forward to co-chairing this new task force with Mexican Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources Juan Jos茅 Guerra Abud as we work together to deepen the policy and regulatory coordination between our two nations in critical areas, including clean electricity, grid modernisation, appliance standards and energy efficiency. Working together, we can further the continent鈥檚 commitment to promote regional energy security, integration, and competitiveness," Moniz concluded.
