Laboratory corroborates OriginOil鈥檚 flowback water treatment system
OriginOil Inc., developer of Electro Water Separation鈩 (EWS), the high-speed, chemical-free process to clean up large quantities of water, has published independent laboratory results verifying dramatic effectiveness in treating flowback water at a rate greater than 1000 bpd from a disposal site in Western Colorado.
鈥淲e knew from early internal lab tests that CLEAN-FRAC鈩 has outstanding capabilities. Now those results have been verified in a demonstration-scale system by Lizard Analytical Laboratories, an independent laboratory located in Grand Junction, Colorado,鈥 stated Lee Portillo, VP of Engineering for OriginOil. 鈥淲e are now scheduling multiple customer site trials and intend to continue to publish performance results and case studies from these test sites.鈥
The Lizard Analytical Laboratories test report is available .
These water quality test results complement the recent announcement regarding the very low CLEAN-FRAC energy usage of 0.22 kwh/bbl of water processed which amounts to around US$ 0.03/bbl. Typically oil and gas plays yield water with much higher salinity, which could lower the energy usage even more. CLEAN-FRAC not only removes as much as 99% of the suspended solids and hydrocarbons, it has been shown to do so with very low energy usage.
Tests and results
The system tested was OriginOil鈥檚 CLEAN-FRAC end-to-end system, which in this case included: the EWS module plus an iSep鈩 UltraFiltration (UF) membrane system from TriSep Corporation to provide downstream polishing. CLEAN-FRAC systems can include advanced downstream treatment steps to meet a customer鈥檚 specific water quality needs.
Contaminant reduction numbers
- 99.6% of turbidity.
- 90.3% of total suspended solids.
- 90.5% of oil in water.
Lower energy costs
On 2 July, OriginOil the low energy cost of CLEAN-FRAC in treating frac flowback and produced water during large-scale testing at a salt water disposal well in Western Colorado, averaging Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) of 0.22 kWh/bbl including pumping and membrane energy.
On 27 May, a showcase was held at the headquarters of OriginOil licensee, Industrial Systems Inc. (ISI) on Colorado鈥檚 Western Slope. The showcase featured the CLEAN-FRAC 1500 system, which is designed to process frac flowback and produced water at a rate of up to 1500 bpd, to the exact purity levels that customers require.
