The pipeline project
The planned US$750 million pipeline would transport fracked gas over 124 miles, from Pennsylvania to New York; running through Broome, Chenango, Delaware and Schoharie, before being carried to Canada and New England for overseas export.
Supporters believe the pipeline will provide safer transport for natural gas and cheaper energy bills.
The protest
The group gathered outside the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) headquarters and demanded a new public comment period on water quality permits, in turn delaying a state decision.
Roger Downs, the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter Conservation Director stated: "About 700 000 trees will be cut down, 277 streams will be crossed, and water quality will be destroyed."
The decision?
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has already approved the pipeline construction, however, they cannot proceed without DEC approval.
