Project announcements

The Energy Department鈥檚 Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E0 has announced US$60 million in funding for 22 innovative new projects aimed at detecting and measuring methane emissions and developing localised thermal management systems that reduce the energy needed to heat and cool buildings. The projects are funded through ARPA-E鈥檚 two newest programs: Methane Observation Networks with Innovative Technology to Obtain Reductions (MONITOR) and Delivering Efficient Local Thermal Amenities (DELTA).

Ernest Moniz, US Energy Secretary said, 鈥渢hese new projects highlight the Department of Energy鈥檚 commitment to developing a broad range of disruptive technologies to ensure a secure, affordable and sustainable American energy future. Investments in innovative methane detection and thermal management technologies demonstrate ARPA-E鈥檚 role in catalysing energy research and development by leveraging our top scientists and engineers from across the country.鈥

Assistant Secretary for Fossil Fuels Christopher A. Smith has been confirmed by the Senate as the DOE鈥檚 Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy. Moniz said, 鈥淐hris Smith鈥檚 depth of expertise and experience in the fossil energy field make him well qualified for this position. I am confident that he will continue to serve the Department, President Obama and the nation with the same dedication he has shown over the past five years. I thank the Senate for their action to approve Chris鈥 nomination, and I look forward to continuing my work with him, to ensure the US can continue to rely on clean, affordable energy from our nation鈥檚 fossil fuel resources.鈥

Prior to joining the Department, Smith served in managerial and analytical positions in the private sector. He spent 11 years with two major international oil companies focused primarily on upstream business development and LNG trading, including three years negotiating production and transportation agreements in Bogota, Colombia.
