National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby repeatedly denied that the United States was involved in explosions that damaged the Nord Stream pipelines, speaking to Fox News.

“It’s a completely false story. There is no truth to it, Shannon,” Kirby told host Shannon Bream, when asked about an article by journalist Seymour Hersh alleging US involvement. “Not a shred of it. It is not true. The United States, and no proxies of the United States had anything to do with that, nothing.”

Hersh, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist and former New Yorker staff writer, released information in a Substack post on 8 February claiming that the Nord Stream pipeline bursts were carried out by US Navy divers disguised as a NATO military exercise. Hersh wrote that the Navy divers placed remotely triggered explosives three months prior to the pipeline bursts in September that caused extensive damage to Nord Stream 1.

Asked by Bream whether the administration would have an obligation to inform Congress of such an operation, Kirby said: “Obviously, we keep Congress informed appropriately of things both classified and unclassified. But I can tell you now, regardless of the notification process, there was no US involvement in this.”
