Al Monaco, the CEO of Enbridge, stated that the company is still attempting to construct its Northern Gateway pipeline. The pipeline could begin construction if the company satisfies the 209 conditions that were stated in its 2014 permit, in addition to acquiring more community support.

Monaco believes that Enbridge will not meet their set deadline of 31 December 2016 for construction of the 1177 km pipeline, as directed by the National Energy Board (NEB).

鈥淥ur ability to begin construction before the end of the year is really quite remote at this point. We are really in evaluation mode,鈥� he stated. He continued to explain that Enbridge is assessing whether an extension would necessary for the pipeline construction project, and that actions must be taken is a later deadline is rewarded.

Monaco stated: 鈥淲e are not looking at our watch here on the project. This really will take some more time to develop and that鈥檚 what we鈥檙e focused on.鈥�

Due to the federal government prohibiting tanker traffic along the north coast of British Columbia, the project 鈥� which will transport condensate from northern Alberta to Kitimat 鈥� was previously set back. Thus, the potential need for a deadline extension. However, the company will still aim to construct the line despite the tanker ban.

In addition to delays on Enbridge鈥檚 Northern Gateway pipeline, its Sandpiper and Line 3 pipelines in the US have also had setbacks. These delays came to head after a final environmental impact statement was ordered by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission before they would process any additional permits.
